How Can Vṛndāvana and Kṛṣṇa's Līlā Unfold Within the Citta? The Startling Theology of Citta-vihārad-avatāra
Among the many beautiful expressions found in Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava poetry, few are as profound and as theologically arresting as the phrase citta-vihārad-avatāra . At first glance, it appears to be a poetic embellishment, a lyrical way of saying that Kṛṣṇa lives in the heart of His devotee. Yet a closer reading reveals something far more radical. The poet does not say that Kṛṣṇa merely resides ( nivāsa ) in the heart; he says that He sports ( vihāra ) there. This single word transforms the entire understanding of bhakti. The culmination of spiritual practice is not simply to remember Kṛṣṇa or to think about Him, but to refine one's consciousness until it becomes a living Vṛndāvana where the eternal Nanda-kumāra freely enacts His divine pastimes.
